Anyone Considering Cancelling Travel

I will say on my current trip to Texas, making had been pretty rare (except we mask when appropriate). Things seem close to normal here but we are staying vigilant.

I was trying to find out if the way they're enforcing it has changed at all recently.

oiseaux has a better handle on it than me. My experience is, less than 3 weeks ago, I got into France just fine with my CDC card, then I went into two French pharmacies with it to get a QR Pass Sanitaire. Both had no idea what to do with me. I finally got the QR code through the online process, which has apparently been scrapped. Now you get the QR code through pharmacies! Ha, I hope someone informed the ones I visited in downtown Bordeaux.

Spain has an online pass but I don’t have one, because my French QR code is supposed to be legit across the EU. I took the train here and no one has asked for it, though. My CDC card seemed good enough when we flew from Barcelona to Mallorca.

All of this is to say, we find the patchwork confusing but we have coped so far. Maybe stick with one country and figure its rules out? Now we have to go back to Bordeaux and get Covid tests in order to return to the U.S. Oh well, we’ll see.

For those that recently went to Mexico, did they require a COVID test within do many hours to get into the country?

Also - I heard Mexico recognizes global entry, has anyone had any success doing this (we’re landing in Cancun)?

there is a list of pharmacies on the government website that are authorized to do the pass sanitaire conversion. My understanding is that in major cities like Paris it is rare to find a place that is not checking for the pass. I return this coming week, and I'll be able to check. My experience back in August was the same. We may drop into Italy as well, so I will be able to verify the situation there as well.

Information on the new pass sanitaire system: LINK
(I can confirm that since the launch, additional conversion locations have been added, making it much more convenient)

I heard the French app was updated to have expiration dates so they may start requiring boosters to keep the pass valid.

It sounds like the UK pass which also has an expiry date, which refreshes every time it is opened. The expiration date only applies to the actual barcode.

In the NHS App, your COVID-19 status includes a 2D barcode. The expiry date does not apply to your vaccination status. Any expiry date refers only to the barcode and will update automatically each time you go into the NHS App.

Travel -> Apprehensive

I'm getting set to travel to what was a hot zone -- Florida (more precise Fort Lauderdale) for another cruise on 12/7/21. Cruise 12/9/21 - 12/19/21. Going to an indoor music event on 12/3/21 (SF Philharmonic) then rapid antigen test 12/7/21. Thinking to suffer through another KN95 experience. Or if I suck it up and get the booster is any medical grade mask enough?? I'll be in Florida for 2 days then on a fully vaccinated ship and doing ship excursions (never used those before) Screenshot_20211114-090105.jpg

IIRC so far you've had just the one J&J dose, more than 6 months ago? In your shoes I'd consider myself almost barely vaccinated, until I got a booster. The J&J data does not seem to hold up after several months.

Florida is no longer a hot zone, but it's still Florida so anything can happen in a month or two. Still, personally I worry less about what zip code I'm in than what I'm doing in that zip code. Indoor crowds - nope, don't care where. You'll be flying too no doubt from SF to FLL?

I'm not sure what your actual level of risk is, but with that much activity, I'd be getting boosted well before all of that, or not doing any of it.

I've traveled this year, including being in some packed cable cars and funiculars.

Have avoided infections so far and I just got my booster last week.

But I wouldn't go on a cruise or indoor concert. Not that I would do these things before the pandemic.

YMMV.

I try!! I actually went to the drive thru no appt necessary place Saturday and they turned me away. I understand. No underlying risks factors, not a minority, not working, not under 12 ..... Safeway says I can get it there because I'm over 18 (changed appt to 2 miles away on Friday).

Yes I'm flying there then just doing the HOHO Water Taxi (?) and outdoors stuff.

I'll do indoor stuff here where everyone's carded & masked (SF Philharmonic 12/3) but not there.

Adding: so the type of mask is irrelevant once I actually get a 2nd shot??

No, the booster means you are less likely to be very sick or die should an infected person spread it to you. But it's still not a zero chance.

The mask means you are less likely to catch/spread it from/to others.

Does the type of mask still matter? Or is there a larger KN95?? The ones I bought fit the kids not me

I am finally getting on a plane tomorrow for the first time to spend 3 weeks in Austin TX with my sister and mother. I haven't seen them in 19 months!

On another happy note, the latest statistics from my part of Seattle show that my zip code is 89.2% vaccinated for those 12 and up. The neighboring zip code is at 90.6% Pretty dang good!

My MIL is going into surgery this week so we are headed to Switzerland to be with my wife's family. I just booked our tickets today for departure this Wednesday. It looks like we just have to complete the entry forms online no earlier than 48 hours prior to the flight and submit the vaccine information. We also have to apply for a pass to get access to hospitals, restaurants, and other facilities. Then we will need a PCR test to return in December.

This State.gov site:

Says you need:
You will need a viral test (NAAT or antigen test) to determine if you are currently infected with COVID-19.

The antigen test is cheaper and faster.

I assumed base on my return flight 10 days ago from Canada that I needed a negative PCR test. I paid $128 USD for that test.

I just completed the entry forms and received our QR codes for entry. In addition we had to download the COVID Cert app (vaccine passport) and submit our travel and vaccination information and pay $30 Swiss Francs each for the QR code that takes up to 5 days to process. You need the pass to access any public facility. Hopefully we will receive it by Thursday when we arrive.

You probably know better than I , as I've not left the USA in 1.5 yrs :(

But some others say the antigen is fine : https://www.early-retirement.org/forums/f46/travel-hopes-2021-a-105268-48.html#post2689760

Maybe the requirements changed recently. ?

We have a few days in London booked next week, traveling with our son. It is his birthday, my wife’s birthday and Thanksgiving that week so we are looking forward to a good time. The hotel is the same one we all stayed at in November 2019 along with our daughter from California.

Just received an email from the hotel saying that because of issues due to the pandemic they are closing for the rest of the year. They have booked us into another hotel close by, with the same level of rooms we have booked.

The location and write up of the hotel looks just as good, just a little wrinkle in the trip.

After flying transatlantic for the first time since the start of the pandemic and based on our observations, we are going to be in this mess for a long time. We flew from LAX to CDG on an Air France 777 in business class yesterday. The flight was 100% full. It was continuation of a flight from Tahiti with the same aircraft. You would think that after 19 months of this pandemic, people would know how to wear a mask. A large number still use them as chin diapers. Although masks are mandatory at airports and in airplanes, wearing them below your nose offers no protection. We were in our pod seats for the flight to CDG and were reasonably isolated. However, for our connecting flight from CDG to GVA we were on a full flight on an Air France A319 with many partially masked passengers and many coughing so profusely throughout the 55 minute flight that we didn't want to remove our masks to eat. I had to wonder how many people caught the cold or flu or worse on that flight even though had they wore a mask properly and protected themselves. Austria and Switzerland are facing another wave to the point where Austria has mandated lockdowns for the unvaccinated. Switzerland will be voting on the fate of their COVID certificate on the 28th of November. If countries with relatively small populations such as Austria and Switzerland are having so many issues containing the virus, what does it say for the more populous nations?

+1 Going into snowbird migration and all bets are off again.

Cheers!
