Best approach in general to a hot upstairs?

In our first house, I put in an attic roof mounted vent fan, and a whole house fan. Cooled the upstairs and the attic. The motor of the attic fan eventually burned out. But the whole house fan still cooled both the upstairs and the attic. The whole house fan sucked air from the basement up...

This weather is awful - 2024 to ?

High and dry is good. I remember surveying the Addicks reservoir in the early’80s following a downpour. Lots of heat, humidity, mosquitoes and snakes. big snakes.

^^3" is a light rain for you folks in Texas. Most unstudied flood plains in our area are based on the flood of 1957- apparently the highest flood of record here. Supposedly 6-10" of rain in a couple of days. A normal rain for Texas. I found a 1957 photo of my grandfather and I coming down the...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

Hand me down tools are the best. A couple on my board were my grandfather's. But I screwed up. When he passed, my grandmother told me to take all of his tools that I wanted. I didn't have room for them, so I declined. Most were still in his basement workshop when my grandmother passed 21 years...

    Your recent repair? - 2021 to ?

SIL gave me her grandfather's axe. Probably at least 100 years old. Broken handle. Bought a new handle from an amish guy in PA. Had to do some filing to get it to fit. I'm going to use it as a workshop decoration. My days of cutting trees with an axe are long gone.

"The way we measure things is a proxy for what we value." - Huh?

I don't understand it at all. If a 4'x8' sheet of plywood has a value of $50, what difference does the way of measuring 4' and 8' make?

Who has no scheduled commitments in retirement?

I like your 2 hour rule!! I have a similar rule for yard work, but my limit is 4 hours per day. I'll have to reduce mine to 2 hours and cite your rule when I explain my reduction to DW.

I came to my senses and decided to call a pro. Walt - Although it makes sense to call the power company, my experience with their tree people tells me that it will never get done. And I have 2 sap dripping trees overhanging parking spots at our garage, and also several limbs overhanging the...

Who has no scheduled commitments in retirement?

I did some consulting and HOA things when I first retired. I haven't had any scheduled commitments for the past several years. No boredom whatsoever.

Niece 20 miles away just had a hail storm. Only thunder here. Had a couple power outages within the past week due to storms/ trees down over wires. Generator has been getting a workout this year. I have a dead tree 20' from our overhead lines at the street - on our side of the property line...

Help me replace my kitchen stove

We put in a GE Monogram induction cooktop and separate oven as part of our 2018 kitchen remodel. It's great so far. I'm not sure, but I think that DW needed to get new pans to work on the induction. At least that's what she told me.
