    Baseball 2024

I woke up today only to find that Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth are no longer tops in MLB batting average and slugging percentage. https://www.npr.org/2024/05/29/g-s1-1525/mlb-negro-leagues-stats-josh-gibson

    My 40th Thread...Linux Life

My latest linux "task" :) is to set up a bootable DVD or USB with MX Linux with some nice "utilities". MX Linux itself has a boot repair tool. Plus I like Gnome Disks over Gparted, so I installed that. Also, I added Brave browser should I need some private browsing in Brave with Tor. You get...

Yes, about the graphics card. A cheap one but gets the job done for me.

    Haunted Computer

The OEM Dell model was marked as 300 watts but I don't even think it was strong enough for that. I connected my PC to a kill-a-watt meter running with my new PSU and that only got up to about 75 watts max. Yet, with the Dell PSU, that still didn't boot my PC (though the indicator lights...

    Haunted Computer

I hear you about days of building a PC from scratch are over. I still repair my old desktops. But from scratch, the older I get the more difficult the task of seeing small connections (I need to take off glasses and go close to see which Sata channel is which) and handling small parts.

    Haunted Computer

I went ahead and bought a new PSU after all. Should arrive from Amazon in the morning. I tried using my old Dell PSU, but it is pretty much shot. At least the good is now I'll get to use my new PSU tester on a new PSU :).

    Haunted Computer

An update. My eternal wait finally ended as I got the PSU tester today. Good news and bad news. The good, the tester shows a fault in the SATA connections of the PSU. So, this follows my theory of my computer spitting out SATA errors on the screen. The bad news, I do have an old Dell PSU...

    Sous Vide Cooking ?

I own the USV20 avidarmor chamber vacuum sealer and love it. The size is just right for 1 person. Avidarmor also has other models as well as other companies. I do own a very old Foodsaver also but that's just for resealing bags like for potato chips and mason jars. (The USV20 can also do...

    Sous Vide Cooking ?

Sous vide cooking seems totally foreign at first. I remember on of the first things I cooked, I was totally confused as to how to get the water temperature right. Now, I pretty much keep things simple. I use the same time and temp setting for burgers, pork chops and steak. Result are to my...

    Sous Vide Cooking ?

My problem is sous vide is with that way of cooking, now I like my burgers pink in the inside instead of medium well like more traditional cooking. I try to limit to no more than once a month as don't want to take too many chances with red meat.

    Sous Vide Cooking ?

I'd be more concerned about eating the tasty BBQ meats from a grill than any sous vide cooking with plastic.

    Computer Security

Phew! Dodged a bullet. I don't see 0123 as the most popular . Kidding aside, I like to keep pins and passwords random when possible. Better that I don't know so I won't leak.

    Sous Vide Cooking ?

There are plenty of videos on youtube about sous vide cooking . I don't have access to a grill and prefer to cook sous vide meats like pork chops, steaks and burgers and then sear on a cast iron pan. Chicken doesn't sous vide well. Doesn't end up like chicken on a grill. At least that's...

Recommend me a quality home printer.

I have one of those tank inkjets. I'm now spoiled with color prints. One reason is color printing is so cheap using a tank printer. Along with color or not, when looking for a new printer is to consider if the printer prints on both sides or not. Personal preferences but good to know...

Anybody Using an Alternative ID Email Address?

I like this approach more that what I'm doing. Think I will start doing this instead. Even create a very simple email name like "makemyday" or something for easy recall ;) .

Anybody Using an Alternative ID Email Address?

I've used free temporary emails with varying results. Had thought that I bookmarked some of the websites I've used for this purpose but can't find the bookmarks. Some sites that you want to give a fake email address are onto this and don't allow domains of known fake email sites. If I go to a...

Recommend me a quality home printer.

I have one of those ink tank printers. Now that I have my system of wasting a little ink and paper each day and running a maintenance clean cycle as needed, I'm happier having it "working" instead of clogging. The ink tanks are made more for frequent printing which might be the case of the OP...

    Rebalancing (triggers/timing)...

I use annual equity target as 100-age. I rebalance once a year (around New Year) so I won't forget. When I rebalance, I do so mostly in retirement accounts to not incur capital gains. That's pretty much it for me. I have things down to a routine that only today I realized the Dow hit...

    Haunted Computer

I actually changed the CMOS battery not long ago. Did not make a difference. I do know what you mean though about power supply tester might just be a false sense of security. If after testing and the tester shows PSU as fine, then I'm kind of back to square 1 and it's a guessing game.

    Haunted Computer

I know. The machine is just old hardware with linux so I don't mind the dinosaur-ness of it. But it is supposed to be one of those machines in the corner that is reliable and works. But instead, it is like a sick puppy, spitting out errors. I'd think that I "fixed" the problem only to to...

    Haunted Computer

Old Dell Optiplex 980 midtower desktop. Not sure what year. I've decided to take a step back and bide my time until I get my power supply tester to clear my mind. I've been chasing ghosts this past month (or longer without knowing). I do have a spare power supply that might work too but...
