Liquidity in case of immediate need

Most CDs can be broken for a nominal fee. I've broken CDs when I've needed cash (for a higher rate CD).

Examples of current inflation - add yours!

July is expected to see another round of USPS price increases. The first class first ounce is set to rise 7.4% from 68 to 73 cents, and the additional ounce up 16.7% from 24 to 28 cents. For those who still mail a fair amount, the best inflation beater is to buy additional ounce stamps, which...

    identifying AI writing by blandness

Yes, AI audio still needs a bunch of work. I watched a manufacturing video in which the AI narrator kept mentioning canens. Canens? Eventually I realized it was supposed to be can ends.

    identifying AI writing by blandness

Has anyone else also noticed an increase in sites with very bland content? I suspect sites are being AI generated in order to quickly create ad space. The writing is devoid of creativity and inventive flavor. It's like an over-boiled mush of generic phrases from multiple sources. For example, I...

trying to understand capital gains calculations

I suspect they are saying 3 percentage points beyond a 20% gain pays for the tax because 3/20 = 15%.

Yes, I'd noticed that. Would be nice of a reload was not needed, easier on the server too, I'd think.

The Economist: Baby-boomers are loaded. Why are they so stingy?

$1 bought 72% less gasoline in 1981 than it did in 1970 per Gas Price History. It also bought 70% fewer first class postage stamps. Yes, those are a bit less than 86% but they are a good proxy and demonstrate a dramatic erosion of purchasing power.

Who has no scheduled commitments in retirement?

Without some sort of commitments to mark time, and no one to tell me when to run, I fear that ten years will get behind me in a blink.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

Choosing from the Latest Posts column at right brings up the corresponding topic but does not unbold it. That's an unwelcome change from the prior board because when I next look at the Latest Posts, the topic I just read is still bold, making me think more was added to it even though that is not...

The Economist: Baby-boomers are loaded. Why are they so stingy?

If so, it's not far off. Many key things more than tripled in price during that period, such as gasoline. Lacking war bonds to pay for Vietnam, the dollar was devalued, hence inflation.

The Economist: Baby-boomers are loaded. Why are they so stingy?

Because elephants prefer to trumpet? I can imagine many factors. Better average health than the prior generation, better savings plans, a huge run up in their 401k stock holdings during and after their earning years, deflationary technology, etc.

    Largest one day trade?

Instead of trades, I'd call those swings. Anyone invested long enough will have a portfolio 10% up day and a 10% down day eventually. I've been a seller into the NVDA run up, which with hindsight hasn't been the right idea during the past year, but one day the NVDA music will stop.

Fidelity 2FA via Symantec VIP --- End Run by phone?

Limited battery life means a replacment device will beneeded, and that device must be either a copy of the original (meaning it can be cloned, a weakness) or the user is exposed to the weak re-identification process you described.

Fidelity 2FA via Symantec VIP --- End Run by phone?

The VIP device is a nice idea but I agree it's only as strong as the weakest link. Another weakness is the device can be hacked, meaning someone else can generate the same code as your unit. It also has a limited life due to its battery that can't be replaced.

I've decided the powers that made the universe so inscrutable also wrote the rules of IRAs.

    Do you keep envelopes?

Yes, it's nice the sender supplies documentation so I don't have print it myself. Many of the remaining paper bills have tax consequences, like medical. Paper lets me easily document it so I don't need to try to find it on some old device or web site 10 years from now when I want to do an HSA...

    Do you keep envelopes?

I toss a bill's envelope upon payment. That creates an easy visual clue for me. Anything still in an envelope needs to be attended to, whereas if there's no envelope, my task has been finished.

    Gone by the third generation

That makes lots of sense. It might help explain why so many huge inheritances don't last many generations: they leave no incentive to do well the things you mention.

Bad service: What would you do?

The broccoli thing is odd. Maybe a communications breakdown between staff and chef, some of whom are ESL? I've many times seen restaurants comp expensive meals for the entire table when things have gone wrong, like the soup being spilled on one of the party, or champagne spraying on the group...

Microsoft’s AI chatbot will ‘recall’ everything you do on a PC

Once an AI has learned something, how does one delete that information? From what I have read, the answer is not clear in part because we don't have a good understanding of how AI stores information.

Forum Update - We're back! Ask your questions here.

The "Latest posts" column at right shows 10 posts. It feels like the quantity had been greater on the prior board, but perhaps I am misremembering. I'd not mind upping the number to 15 or even 20 but find no configuration option for doing that.

Bad service: What would you do?

I'd have "checked on my meal" sooner unless I wanted to spend more time there. Feedback in the form of calm discussion is valuable to a business and employees.
