The "What are you doing now" question

I retired 10 months ago, so we're kind of in the same boat. I did change my LInkedn status to Retired. A friend I knew a few years back asked 'Why'. And I said so I can do what I want. She asked 'where will you live'. I said "the same house, my Lifestyle has not changed, and I will live the...

    Airline Scam

I only book directly with the airlines now. But even then, I got scammed by British Airways. I booked directly with American Airlines and I was able to choose my seats, but one connecting flight was with British Airways, from London to Munich. And British Airways wants me to pay for my Seats...

    Bid to upgrade flights?

I heard about biddings. I saw a Youtube video where the guy bidded for un upgrade to Business class. I think he paid $900 more, but that was worth it. Cheap. What I don't know is which airlines do the biddings.

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

I took a Photo of the Solar Eclipse with the moon trying to partially cover the sun. In our area, only 70% - 80% is covered by the partial eclipse.

    First million is enough

I agree. Based on my projections and Firecalc, my nest egg will continue to grow after hitting more than 7 figures when I retired, so I need to spend more and be happy. Firecalc says 100% for a 40 year retirement. Health is the most important thing. I run/walk/jog 4-5 miles 3 times a week...

Equities Return are Stellar - should I withdraw some now or wait end of year?

I understand people saying 'we don't time the market, but we rebalance our AA". But my question is "isn't rebalance your AA also timing the market ?" When your equities are getting "too high", you time that market to rebalance - by withdrawing your 'overvalued equity" and putting it into...

    So grateful for the ACA

I too, am so grateful, for our ACA Insurance. I retired last year, and went straight to the ACA market, and paid $0. The subsidy covered the Bronze package we got. We are very healthy and we only used it for our Yearly Health check up. I think our co-pay (DW and I) was around $80.

Equities Return are Stellar - should I withdraw some now or wait end of year?

So I retired last year and want to try and withdraw some from my 403B this year. Equities have had a stellar performance in the first quarter (Jan-March), should I withdraw some now, and do a quarterly withdrawal, or wait till end of the year for a lump-sum withdrawal? Care to share your...

    Monthly Grocery Expenditure

I budget around $600/month for DW and I for groceries. Two persons - no kids. This includes our 1x-2x a month visit to Costco. Living in the South, so low cost area. Still lucky to be able to buy Rib-eye steak or T-Bone at our local Food Lion at $6.99-$7.99/lb. when there is a discount sale...

    Age 67, retirement in progress

Great Job Rodi. Yeah, we also cut $200/month by not eating out much. Cooking and preparing food at home is healthier and cheaper. I lost 26 pounds just eating healthier food at home, eating organic. Eating out means eating a lot of processed food with sugar, carb, and salt. Good job on...

    Age 67, retirement in progress

Well, so you are $4000/year short. Maybe in the next few days, you can think about how to cut your monthly expenses by $100-$150/month, because you said some expenses falls thru the cracks. Even $100 a month saved would be $1200/year in less expenses. Then you're down $2,800/year and that...

    Another asset allocation question

Retired last year at 59.5 years old. Asset allocation is about 53% Stocks & 47% Fixed Assets/Cash earning 4.35% - 5.25% Once we get SS when I hit 62, the asset allocation will be closer to 60% Stocks 40% Fixed Income and Cash. Maybe 59% - 41%.

    Blow that Dough 2024

Paid Business class plane tickets for our trip to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland for next month - $5300+ for tickets. We also reserved 4-star hotels, and a nice Audi A6 wagon rental. Probably $15,000 for this vacation. Bought a new IPad for the wife and got an Iphone 14 Pro Max to use for...

    Retired 10 years today!

Great story. I'm like you. I don't plan to convert to ROTH until I hit 65 and using Medicare. I want to save money on paying for healthcare and last year I paid $0 zero on the Affordable Care Act, and even got a tax refund when I filed my taxes.

What do I do with $15k

Spend when you really need it. If you love to travel and need a break from stress, then go travel. Take a vacation and have some happy time with loved ones. If you need to buy things, then buy. Wife's iPad just died, so we bought a brand new one which was discounted by $500 on Ebay. Maybe...

I think I made it...for now, at least.

Congrats! So, what's your yearly expenses ? $3 Mil is a nice number, and you can retire at 55 and splurge. No use postponing it one more year. Just do it. You can definitely take some European vacation if you want to. As for the swimming pool, you can spend $50K on that.
