The Economist: Baby-boomers are loaded. Why are they so stingy?

No you were not. However, I also found the terms stingy, miserly and hording a bit offensive.

    Struggling in Wisconsin. Advice?

Hello Arnie, Welcome to the forum. While you recognize that you are fortunate in some respects (family and financially) I believe that part of you is in a type of mourning for what should have been. Respect your feelings and give yourself time. The truth is you may, or you may not find...

"The way we measure things is a proxy for what we value." - Huh?

I'll give an example. We measure in gold, we measure in dollars, we measure, we measure in time. Which is the most valuable to you?

I need some opinions on my break down and ideas.

Are you doing 100 % joint and survivor for both pensions? Have you run a comparison vs. postponing SS of the higher earner and taking healthcare costs out one of the pensions to protect the survivors' cash flow? Have you calculated the cost of Roth conversions if spread over several years vs...

    Transfer on Death mechanics

When I did DOA transfers for my parents' accounts, I just needed death certificates. As a caveat, with larger estates, because assets do not pass though probate, does not necessarily mean that they are not within the taxable estate.

Who has no scheduled commitments in retirement?

Other than family obligations, I gave myself a year off with as little commitment as possible when I first retired. I really needed it. No, I wasn't bored.

tax refund taking 3 months and counting

My CPA files for me but I take my check snail mail. Last year and this year I took a 10k refund. The check arrived in about 8 -10 days from his filing.

    Largest one day trade?

It would have been divesting myself of some mutual fund holdings, maybe two years ago. I don't recall the amount.

    Financial Advisors

Welcome to the forum Happily Retired. If you are paying a percent for AUM, feel free to contact your financial advisor as often as you want. I do agree with the reading recommendations listed in this thread. There is obviously no "need" to rush to do anything, but as it appears that you are...

It appears so subject to the 60 day rollover limitations. Here is a similar thread

Treasury Bills, Notes, and Bonds Discussion 2024+

If mail is misdelivered to my house (and the correct address is nearby) I put a sticky on it indicating that it was misdelivered and drop it off at the correct house. Otherwise, I write misdelivered on the envelope and put it back in my mailbox for the postal worker to pick up when they make...

    Blow that Dough 2024

I really enjoyed the aviation museum in Pensacola. I was fortunate enough to visit the museum when DS was training / stationed there.

    Blow that Dough 2024

I suspect one of those angles flew over my house the other day. (I am a fan.) They are in the neighborhood for an airshow, we are not in an airflight path, and the jets (at least to my untrained ears) sound different. Enjoy the show!

    Do you keep envelopes?

It depends. My granddaughter sent me a letter with drawings, decorations, and little messages on the envelope. I'll let you guess whether I kept that or not.

What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Something a little different for me. I attended an on-line auction for a house. DH and I were going to travel to the location for the open house, however DDIL had a medical emergency (she's ok) so DH had to rush down to Florida to help her drive to medical appointments and take care of the DGC.

    Claiming Social Security: Decision Tree

Leaving additional room for Roth conversions is one of my motivations. DH, the higher earner / longer worker is delaying to increase the survivor's benefits.

    Gone by the third generation

It seems like a lot is involved to pull oneself into the uber rich class, but "falling back" is less of an effort. The succeeding generations can either engage in some type of work, coast, or go off the rails. (I did see some families where the progeny were educated and put to work in the...

Consolidating Schwab Stocks to My Fidelity Account

I was just transferred over there from TD Ameritrade. I am not comfortable yet, but I believe they have a list of stock for which they allow slices. (I would go back and look but probably wouldn't find it.) Update: Charles Schwab

Consolidating Schwab Stocks to My Fidelity Account

You can always call Fidelity and check - but unless it is something that Fidelity does not hold (which is unlikely) you should be able to transfer your stock and ETFs in kind. Fidelity is good at extracting stocks and ETFs from other brokerages.
