Supplements
One more time...
In the spirit of DT's health and fitness poll, I'm curious as to what supplements everyone takes for their health.

Cube - if anyone has something to add, click on Edit Poll - you can add and you can also edit an existing option - the votes won't reset. (by the way I think I misspelled gingko )

My, my, we're a constipated bunch. No one has voted for fiber supplements so far...

All-bran cereal.
I try to avoid supplements and stick with whole sources for the most part. Supplements are unregulated. Not only are the claims unproven, but the quality and accuracy of the contents is often questionable.

We had a thread on that for dogs. * I started to give it to my dog a few weeks ago, and she seems happy. * People seem to like the stuff too, and the NIH is just about to publish the results of their recent study.
The other similar miracle drug is chondroitin, and that is more expensive to make. * One group found that many supplements didn't contain the advertised amount of chondroitin.

What kind of dosing are you using for your dog? One of our beagles appears to be getting arthritic (me too, incidentally) and I haven't any clue what appropriate dosing might be.

Here's the thread:
Pet Insurance + Glucosamine
I'm giving her 1000mg/day of the stuff, which is basically the only amount that has been studied. * Nords has good links for horse glucosamine, which can be cheap in bulk (if you don't mind a little hay mixed in).

Yes, good for you, but not something I'd enjoy eating every day. Part of the reason I take the tastier route is that it makes compliance easier.
BTW, I mentioned this before, but it's thought that fiber does its magic through pretty mechanical means. It forms a flubber-like gel in your gut, slows down digestion, and increases the amount of bile acid secreted (which binds LDL). There have been studies that tell you the best viscosity and particle size for the flubber.
