We just Returned from a 9-day Cruise and were somewhat disappointed.

SWR, I think your observations are exactly what I'd expect for a Caribbean cruise out of Florida on a major cruise line on any but possibly the tiniest of ships (which I have no experience out of Florida). It would be wise for anyone without cruising experience and with plans for a...

The "What are you doing now" question

I like to say I relax into the things I used to rush through on the weekends, and somehow, no matter how hard I try, there's always another thing I'm interested in that I "need to get to some day."

    Best Experiences

Even though my job was coding, I loved it so much, I got into hobby projects when I retired. I actually had hobby projects before retiring, but added mobile application development after retirement and now have native applications for Android and iPhone. But I've been retired for 10 years, and...

    Die With Zero - Book

Many comments about the book presume that you need to time it perfectly, so the check to the undertaker bounces, but that's not what the book is about at all. The idea is, if you have enough to be worried that you'll be leaving a lot on the table when you go, you can afford to insure to the...

what office software product do you use?

I use Office 2000, or some very old version. I have a CD that I install on each new machine, and it keeps working. If I download a document, I'll use Google or Libre, but for my own docs, the old stuff works, and I don't/didn't need to learn anything new each time they needlessly rearranged the UI.

    2024 Investment Performance Thread

This is the "gold standard". I use an estimate, which we were calling "monkey (something or other), which just presumes even spending over the time period. A few times I did xirr and compared it with even spending and it was so close as to not worry about. But I do an "all-in" calculation...

Career advice sought for young student about to start college.

Yes, That's the idea I was going for (aptitude ). If the student is not in a rush to get through their youth (like maybe not having financial resources, or does have resources, but is making the mistake of treating life like a business case), then the 4 years of college away from home is about...

Career advice sought for young student about to start college.

I told my kids to get any 4 year degree at a university, and let the chips fall where they may. One went engineering and the other art. Both had aptitude for anything, and I was absolutely certain they'd be successful at whatever they decided to do. And I was right. Both make more money...

Another day, another notice of data breach

Yes, the idea of a local vault probably is the same on a lot of these "trust no one" security products. If there is someone or some entity you have to trust, then they have something to steal and, as noted, probably will get hacked eventually.

Rarely a problem with in the realm we're talking about. The corporate bozos were worried Johnny would rifle through Danny's desk and log on as him, and see how much more he was making than him. In a non-office environment, paper is good.

Absolutely true that implementation is everything. You need a reliable "get out of jail free" card that obviously can't fall in the the wrong hands. One of the big problems with the convergence on a solution is that some for-profit company wants to be in the middle of it. And they're not 100%...

Another day, another notice of data breach

I'll agree, but add something that might be important, and will probably be part of a solution.. People are (the) weak (link), easy to phish. So they're led to a fake logon and their password is compromised. The weak link is really the password. Not having a password would address most of...

Another day, another notice of data breach

Companies must make compromises between convenience and security. Convenience with how data is stored and accessed. It's not an easy problem to solve, as we all keep seeing with the preponderance of breaches. It's an age-old problem that's akin to physical security. You have a door and a lock...

    awash in space aliens

Of course nobody can know. I like the warp engine color, cart before the horse thing. With the extra dimensions thing, the way the math works, as I (barely) understand it, is that things can be "at the same place at the same time." But the idea that the limit associated with moving through our...

Another day, another notice of data breach

What I wonder is.... is the guy who would have bonked you over the head and taken your money now a guy who's transitioned to computer crime? If so, it's an improvement from violent to non-violent crime. Progress!
