State Tax Refund Lost In Mail

I agree with others here. If Informed Delivery indicated it would be delivered yesterday, I would wait at least through tomorrow's mail delivery. We've had a few envelopes not arrive on the day Informed Delivery said they would. One extra note: Assuming the refund check is still in USPS's...

Social Security Number on The Dark Web

I just recently registered for a Medicare online account, and I had one for some time for Social Security, but I have never had one for the IRS. I haven't had the need before. What reasons besides the above would I use an IRS online account?

    Potential Private Retirement Benefit Info

I think my short period in the pension with the first company may have been the reason for this notice. You had to pay into the pension with that company, and I only did it for the first 6 months out of my 11 years there before the first merger. I opted for the 401(k) after that first 6 months...

    Potential Private Retirement Benefit Info

I'm sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I just received the same form SSA-L99-C1 in the mail this week. For me, the year reported was 1993. The old employer listed and the firm handling their pension and retirement accounts, Fidelity, have no account information for me. My merger history is...

Curious thing about April's Social Security Direct Deposit

Our bank always shows "Processing" the Wednesday it is supposed to show up for DW (there might be exceptions for holidays). They will milk it to the last possible moment. I fully expect that to be the case when I start receiving my SS payments.

This weather is awful - 2024 to ?

Just 15 minutes ago, we received an emergency warning from the NWS for the possibility of DESTRUCTIVE three inch size hail through 8:30pm CDT. The capital letters were from the NWS. We're in Central Texas, north of Austin, in Williamson County.

Why are older Americans drinking so much

Pretty much no alcohol except for some holiday meals at home. Usually this involves a bottle of one of Schramsberg's sparkling wines split among four (with DW only having enough for a toast). For me, his averages out to having alcohol once every 2-3 months.

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

In Burnet, TX, they are reporting there are 30,000 out-of-area visitors for the eclipse. Many have set up tents, some with the intention of staying overnight. The city of Burnet has issued the warning this morning that as soon as the eclipse has taken place, they are to immediately leave the...

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

With the latest weather predictions, we're looking at scattered thunderstorms starting about an hour before the eclipse for us in Central Texas, with a high probability of completely cloudy skies. This leads into a 5+ hour window of thunderstorms, and this window keeps getting earlier with each...

Total Solar Eclipse April 8, 2024

We're well within the path of totality here in our part of Central Texas, with the totality duration to be a bit over 3.5 minutes. But we're also forecasted to be cloudy in the morning, with thunderstorms starting in the PM. We'll see.

I've got Covid.... The thread for your covid experiences

No "official" test for COVID-19. As I said, symptoms. 100-101F fever for 3-4 days at the beginning. Coughing for a week with little to no phlegm. Mostly bedridden for close to a week, followed by a few weeks of low energy, sore muscles, and overall fatigue. Loss of taste and smell for at least...

Based on a test? No. Based on symptoms? Yes for my DW in late December 2019, and maybe for me at the same time.

Need help to unlock/reset Thinkpad E570

This points up something I have long thought about. There are some files associated with my main PC and drives that I wish to have retained upon my passing. Mostly tax and financial files, photo files, and a few others. Everything else can be wiped. The problem is I don't think my family would...

Ever have a BTD moment you weren't sure you could even do?

Well, the project is in stall mode as I can't get someone out to modify the backyard. Nearly all of them just want to jackhammer spots in the Bermuda grass and plant large shrubs or trees there. We want to be able to plant small/medium shrubs and perennials. The other option of using raised...

Would Like Input Regarding Cheap Refurb Win10 Computers

Looking at past PC purchases and PC builds, most of my PCs lasted about 5-6 years. Usually, once I jumped to a new Windows OS, I upgraded the hardware (Win95 -> WinXP -> Win7 -> Win10). My current PC is a bit over four years old and should last me until Win10 is EOL'ed in October 2025, making...

USB-C on cell phone to USB-A on computer to transfer data. Easy?

I was really surprised to find I could connect my iPhone 13 to my Windows 10 PC (Dell XPS 8930, about four years old) without any extra software or app. I transfer photos all the time. Even better, the PC has one USB-C jack on the front panel and one USB-C jack on the rear of the tower. That...

    So grateful for the ACA

My megacorp's Under-65 retiree medical plan was even cheaper than that through 2010. Starting in 2011, the monthly premiums started spiking upward. My first year on the plan was in 2017, and it had gotten a great deal more expensive than in 2010, but worst case (premiums plus MaxOOP) remained a...

    So grateful for the ACA

Yep, I saw that. My Under-65 retiree medical insurance option went from a $15/mo premium in 2011 to $925/mo this year, along with raising the MaxOOP from $1000/year to $4000/year. While I didn't start on the retiree medical plan until 2017, I was able to monitor its cost since ACA was passed.

Examples of current inflation - add yours!

Yesterday, DW received notice that her Medigap Plan G premiums would be going up 14.8% in a couple of months. We also found out that our homeowner's premiums, assuming we stay with the same insurance company, will go up 34.4% in our upcoming renewal period.
