I guess. My best mortgage rate was 7 1/2%. Got it down from 13 1/2%. Over the years. Then paid it off around 2000. Average 30 yr is about 6% over the past 100 years. 6% in the 1930's, 5% 1945, 4% in the 50's, 7% end of the 60's etc.

Am 99.9% sure of it. Normal rates are possibly a thing of the past. Artificially low rates could be the new normal. As the average person believes rates are high right now. Hope I am wrong though. The last couple months were a gift I didn't see coming. Would not be surprised to see 3% 5 yr CD's...

Not sure how much longer the 4.5%+ 5 yr and 5% 2 YR Brokered CD's will be around. Been sitting on a ton of $$ in non IRA / non Roth funds in a high yield cash MM. But am thinking now might be the time to move back into CD's. SWVXX has been great, hate getting out, just not sure how long the 5+%...

What If Fed Rate Hikes Are Actually Sparking US Economic Boom?

Was it really like WW2 from 2009 to 2020? No... Mesopotamia, c. 3000 BC: 20% Babylon, Code of Hammurabi, 1772 BC: codified earlier Sumerian custom of 20%. Persian conquest (King Cyrus takes Babylon), 539 BC: rates of 40+%. Greece, Temple at Delos, c. 500 BC: 10% Rome, Twelve Tables, 443 BC...

    TMobile internet

If you have a tower close by go for it. I tried twice, they said it should work. So try it. . But was not close enough. Not 100%. They told me to wait for 1 more tower closer to my home. Cant wait! So sick of paying COX cable 200/month. Have had Cox for 3-4 decades. Battle every year getting...

What If Fed Rate Hikes Are Actually Sparking US Economic Boom?

Its greatly helping me, as both my Roth and Trad. IRA's are in CD's. Just over 4% ave. on all of it. But "Bloomberg" is all I needed to hear. ? Added, I do not consider these as high interest rates. More average over the past 3000 years in reality. But folks got used to artificially low rates...

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

Yep, like 2 high school teams competing. You can keep up on things without watching the news, Watching the news is not keeping up with things. Its keeping things the same. Right where they want you. Mad at the other side.

Anyone else NOT watch the news?

Nope, its just divide and conquer. Once you figure that out, it just becomes a huge scam. And you are left feeling like an idiot. If folks actually came together, it would be game over. And who wants that?

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

A lot of possible assumptions being made there. None of which are on my radar. 12% National sales tax being one of them. If I am reading this right.

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

I re-worded it. In my mind both would have to pay the same taxes when spent. I must be missing something here.

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

I don't get it. The 100 in the wallet was taxed when earned. And the Roth taxed when converted. So how was the Roth taxed twice and the 100 in the wallet any different? Also, any growth on the 100 in the wallet was shown as taxable income, if it was prev. invested. Thanks in advance.

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

Double taxation I have my doubts they would / could tax existing Roth accounts. That would fall under double taxation. But going forward changing the rules on new Roth accounts or positions? I could see that. Or doing away with the program all together. Have contributed in the program since...

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

Never a bad time to do conversions if your tax rate is below your working time tax rate. And I think most everyone knows what's coming. Seems pretty obvious. Higher tax rates and changes to SS. As the math no longer works out. So yes, now is the time. If for some reason you have been waiting.. ;D

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

Exactly. the key is controlling your tax bracket. Some just cant seem to see it. Boasting about a high tax bracket they cant get out of... Like it has anything at all to do with net worth. But to me its key. One of the advantages of putting off 401k taxes when working. Other wise, just do a Roth...

    Rethinking my yearly Roth conversions

Same boat. Did the same. Did conv's from the 12% into the 20% realm. Am now mid 62 and taking SS. 1/2 my 401k/IRA is now Roth. Plan to do 30k a year to 75 in Roth conversions while staying more or less in the 12% married bracket. Solid plan as tax rates will be going up over the next 10-40...

The age when you actually retire, vs. the age when you begin taking social security

31 yrs together? I would think her SS would go up if you married taking the spousal benefit? Also at tax time the married $29,200 deduction might come in handy. Just thinking out loud over here. :) (Might be an easy 20k / year tying the knot) ;D

The age when you actually retire, vs. the age when you begin taking social security

After seeing 10k different SS scenarios here over the years I realized it's just a personal decision. With no wrong answer. Retired at 51 without a pension. Waited 6 months to 62 1/2 to take SS. We both started taking it last month. Me $2520/mo.. Wife turned 62 last Dec. $1165/mo. Have been...

Struggling with asset allocation as young retiree

Side note, I would never bank on 1 or 2 sources of income. Having 3, 4 or more is a safe hedge in case one of them bites the dust. And as mentioned, predicting the future is tough. Am unable to see out the next 40 years, let alone 60. :o)

Struggling with asset allocation as young retiree

After showing up here about 16 years ago on this forum, I realized most here are either heavy in the stock market, or bank heavy on a govt pension or both. None of which were an option for me. So I worked around it. Zero debt. Rental income, a small annuity and SS at 62 puts me right at 100k a...
