    solar storms and electronics

^^^^^^^^^^^^ I keep some cash at home, probably not enough, but there is a cost of missing out on 5% interest. Since this massive solar storm did nothing that I noticed, I'm thinking a solar storm in the future is a non-event for me. Now a nuclear EMP would be bad in many ways.

Recommend me a quality home printer.

After you get a laser printer, just turn off your inkjet printer so your unthinking family will default to the laser. You can turn on the inkjet when you need to print color. We bought a brother laser printer a few years ago to replace the ~10yr old one that still worked but developed an...

    Best Experiences

Best things: Going a 2 week river cruise (Grand European Tour). Spending over 2 months at my family cabin in the Summer. Spending a lot of time talking with my DFIL to learn about his life, as my Dad died when I was too young to listen to him so I know very little about him and his life...

    Rethinking Inheritance

If the deceased has nothing to inherit, then bills incurred before the death are NOT inherited, meaning you don't have to pay them. And if a liquor store told me the departed who died from liver failure owed them money, I'd tell them they are lucky if I don't sue them for causing the death ...

Weddings for children - how much?

For more info: Our daughters both working and their long term boyfriends working decided to get married. They didn't ask for a penny and paid for their own weddings. We gave them cash as a surprise gift. Both are doing fine for the past 9 years.. I suppose they followed my example, I paid for...

    Rebalancing (triggers/timing)...

We take dividends in cash, to provide spending or re-investment (planned vs auto). Allows to reinvest in a different category. I've certainly heard many folks wait until the allocation is off by 5% before doing anything, otherwise you could end up doing it too frequently. In OP's case, if...

Weddings for children - how much?

OP - At $50K , I have to say you are extremely generous. That's a lot of money to spend on a party. I'd keep the amounts fair to each, if these folks think they need more, then since they are working they can spend their own $$$ to top up the amount. It's very easy to spend free money, but if...

    Latest Inflation Numbers and Discussion

Not really different from people with paid off homes not wanting to upgrade to bigger/better more expensive house. Back when mortgages were 2% it was cheap to upgrade, now at ~6% not so cheap.

are home generators going to be unavoidable in the future?

We have no electricity at our cabin, and recently added some solar (small scale). I use solar panels (4x100watts) to feed my solar battery "generator" which has 1,500 Wh capacity. That solar battery is enough for charging all our devices and running an e-kooler for 60 days without fail, but...

    investing 20% in one stock

If you invest in different things, the amounts needed as investment are different. Example if you invest in Gov't bonds (probably the safest) the investment has to be $2M not $500K. Since OP says the $500K would be 20%, it means OP's stash is $2.5M so the bond choice is probably out.

    basement doctors and mice

OP - has a cat and probably doesn't want poison around as it will hurt/kill the cat if a poisoned mouse is caught or simply if the cat touches the poisoned area.

Backdoor Roth All At Once - Single Tax Year Pain

There is no advantage to converting a large IRA to Roth all at one, except to pay extra tax by going into higher tax brackets or by paying with today's dollars that are worth more than dollars in the future. It's always possible we could in a few years fall into a recession and then like Japan...

Invoice from a car rental company alleging "traffic infraction" 9 MONTHS LATER!

Write them: Demand to know why they are sending you this. Ask for proof it was incurred by you, and when did they get the notice (if they sat on it for months, then the late charges are for them to pay). Also ask about the previous payments, as perhaps this was already paid for in the 'extra'...

    Rethinking Inheritance

+1 Same here. I give enough to each that it will "hurt" to be excluded automatically and hope to win more by contesting. Rather than simply trying to win more by fighting the terms.

    basement doctors and mice

When they dug the trench, was it inside or outside the house ? Is your basement floor concrete or dirt ? I found mice getting in a house by the A/C pipes/tubes going in the basement, I simply caulked them to close off the gap and it stopped the mice.

    Anyone ever try Farmer Carries?

Every summer I have to carry 2 full pails of water (2 gallons each = 16.66 pounds each) uphill from the lake as we don't have running water. As a teenager I hated wash day as that meant 6 trips for the wash on top of the regular trips. Didn't know I was doing exercise, it was just life

Best approach in general to a hot upstairs?

commonly the room above the garage has a poorly insulated floor, heat could be coming in from the hot garage. Putting a venting fan in the garage to blow out the hot air would reduce a source of heat. Only need run it in hot weather, not in Winter.

Software or Website to consolidate Net Worth Profile

I do track my net worth, but also just need to know the total value of each account, and value of other things.. I also just record the value once per year. I do this to see the long term changes, and I record the official inflation amount, so I can see the net "true" increase in purchasing...
