    Airline Scam

BA is one of the few airlines that charges for seat assignments in all but first class. You did NOT have to pay for seat assignments. DW and I flew long haul business class LHR to SEA today and were auto assigned seats at check in. We chose not to pay for our seat assignments. As Audreyh1...

Viking Cruises - help me decide.

Just finished a walk through the Cotswolds. About 50 miles in 7 days and we spent nights in Moreton-in-Marsh, Bourton-on-the-Water, Winchcombe, Broadway, and Chipping Campden. A wonderful way to experience the Cotswolds IMO. The towns and villages were charming but the star of the show was...

What new series are you watching? *No Spoilers, Please*

We're enjoying Upper Middle Bogan on Amazon. It's an Australian comedy with Patrick Brammall who was in Colin from Accounts. We liked that one too. We're currently in the U.K. so I don't know if it's available in the U.S.

    Airline mileage programs

Nicely done! There are still plenty of deals out there. I follow 10X Travel along with a few others. I listen to the podcasts on my daily walk. Just finished a week-long walk through the Cotswolds. Lucked out and didn't have to wear our rain gear at all. Fairy tale beautiful place. Flying BA...

    Airline mileage programs

DW and I each have a Delta Reserve card. The annual fee increased to $650 but they added an easy to use $200 Delta Stays (hotel) credit and they changed the language so that annual companion passes can now be used to Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico, and the Caribbean. They're keeper cards for us...

You can also use AA miles on their partners. We've used them on Japan Airlines and Qatar Airlines.

    Airline mileage programs

Flew to Auckland earlier this year using Alaska miles and home from Sydney using AA miles. Flew inter-Australia flights on Virgin Australia using United miles 3 times on that trip. Sitting on the balcony of my AirBnB overlooking the Douro River in Porto this afternoon. Got here using points...

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

Isn't the Chase ATM card a debit card? Ours is and we never use it overseas but we do carry it as a backup card

What Debit/Credit Card Do You Use When Travelling To The UK?

Give Fidelity a call and have them send you a debit card. It's easy and pretty quick. DW and I each have one and carry them separately when traveling. Don't forget to set a travel notification before you leave. An alternative might be to just bring some cash and exchange a nominal amount on...

    Japan advice for April trip

Google Maps worked great for us when we started following directions more carefully. Some of the subway and train stations are massive. Our first time in Tokyo station we just exited at the nearest exit not realizing that the directions also included the correct exit for your intended...

We carry on whenever possible but 7-8 kgs isn't going to happen for us.

    Luggage

We just ordered the Travelpro Platinum International carry on rollaboard - two wheels. One thing that may not have been mentioned here is that the international rollaboards and the international spinners have the same external dimensions but the two wheelers have a 45 liter capacity vs the 39...

    2024 Travel Plans

Thanks again for sharing, I've bookmarked ADC for future reference. Both options IMO are a wonderful way to experience southeast Alaska and are a terrific alternative to the mainstream cruise lines. Back when we were teaching we took the ferry and spent 3 days each in Juneau, Sitka, and...

    2024 Travel Plans

Great post. Morocco wasn't on our bucket list at all. I found uber-cheap flights to Casablanca return and DW actually said "why not?" When it was over we both agreed that it was one of our favorite trips. A very interesting country with a fascinating history. We booked a couple of day trips...

    2024 Travel Plans

Thanks Grasshopper! We've been leaning towards the Hawaii trip but I'm prone to motion sickness. We were in Maui for 10 days in April 2019 and the wind was blowing pretty good the whole time. I passed on a Molikini Crater snorkel trip because of it. What time of the year was your trip and was...

    2024 Travel Plans

Wow, you're really making up for lost time. A quick Google search indicates that you might be cruising with Alaska Dream Cruises. Never heard of them but we did a similar itinerary with Uncruise in June 2021. The ADC website describes their cruises as "active exploration." That's exactly...

Where to travel alone but still be very safe?

Thanks! OAT looks like an excellent option for the OP. BTW, we spent a month in Africa last year and the experience exceeded our already high expectations. I would not, however, recommend Nairobi or Johannesburg to the OP.

Where to travel alone but still be very safe?

Sorry if I've asked this before but what company do you use? We just booked another tour (Sri Lanka) with Intrepid and have always felt safe on tour. We usually fly in early so we book transfers on our own.

Hiking the Cinque Terre as a senior.

Key word here is "elective". We've done quite a few small group tours and our tour leaders have been very good at offering good alternatives. The Cinque Terre is such a beautiful place that if you want to skip a couple of the more challenging sections, no big deal.

Hiking the Cinque Terre as a senior.

I'm 63 and hiked from Corniglia to Vernazza on a daytrip from Florence in June 2023. There were about 25 people in our group and more than half chose not to do the hike including DW. I looked at the Road Scholar "Hiking the Cinque Terre" listing and believe the text below very accurately...

    2024 Travel Plans

Thanks for the suggestions. Since this our first trip to Porto and we'll be without a rental car we'll likely visit the Douro Valley on a daytrip. Already pinned both of the bolded locations and they're in the same general direction and only a 10 to 15 minute walk from our AirBnB. Googled...

    2024 Travel Plans

Very helpful, thank you! I keep a future travel journal and this thread is a great resource. Ended up booking very nice AirBnB's for a week each in Madeira and Albufeira Jan 2025. We'll definitely explore Tavira and Lagos in the Algarve and Duoro Valley while in Porto in April. Thanks for the...

    2024 Travel Plans

Spent 5 nights in Lisbon with a free layover on TAP last December and liked it so much we're going to Porto for 5 days in April. Paid cash for our TAP ticket SFO LIS MUC return and it was significantly cheaper than SFO to LIS. Liked the TAP experience. The direct flight SFO LIS was...

    International airfares outrageous now

We try to book 330+ days out, use points and miles when possible, and are destination flexible. Works for us. We're down under now and have 3 Europe trips, Mexico, and Egypt & Jordan scheduled for 2024. Hunting for a Jan Feb 2025 trip now.
