What are your views on Salim Ramji former exec at Black Rock becoming CEO of Vanguard. should we be concerned?

ESG is all about chasing massive public sector retirement funds. This kind of politics should have no place in investing. Hopefully it's just a fad that has passed and we can get on to the real work.

    investing 20% in one stock

I don't think putting 20% in for getting a visa is such a bad idea if you can somehow pick a good company to buy into. I thought Nutella is owned by Ferrero which is privately held. If I could I would buy into that. ENEL is a green energy company which is mostly owned by the Italian government...

    Fentanyl Dangers

Fentanyl is extremely dangerous but sadly that part of the appeal. Addict will continually up their dosage chasing that high. Its no surprise that addicts end up killing themselves.

Buffett Invests in T-bills instead of Stocks, Waits for Bad Stuff to Happen..loves 5% - all said at the annual meeting.

Every stock market crash has Buffet on a buying spree while everyone else is running for cover. There's no secret how he has the cash to do it. The guy has incredible patience along with huge tolerance for risk.

A Friend in need , how can I help

I've given money away to pay off my friend's credit card debts. She did pay off the credit cards but subsequently racked them right up again. I must confess, I was a victim of my own arrogance. The money I gave her was just 0.003% of my net worth. But to her it was a huge amount of money. My gut...

A Friend in need , how can I help

I've learned my lesson helping someone in a similar situation. Money can solve an immediate problem but it does little for the long term. Handling money requires maturity and discipline, without that they'll be right back to where they are now.

    Basic NW and Accounting Question.

I compute two NW values, one before taxes and one after taxes. I didn't compute the after-tax NW until I was doing large Roth conversions. I didn't want my hundreds of thousands in taxes I have paid not to move my net-worth. Having two NW numbers gives you an ideal of future liabilities but...

The first million takes the longest to achieve

The more millions you rack up the smaller your expenses become in a relative sense. It grows pretty fast if you got a few million under your belt. My ultimate goal is to qualify for Schwab Private Wealth Services in which you need ten million. Not there yet... but working on it.

Reducing stock exposure in Retirement, age 60+

When you see massive layoffs in tech and other industries you know AI is working. I'm sure glad I'm retired. I'd hate to graduate just to find there's no jobs.

    Social Security (House) Proposal

70% of the divorces are initiated by the wife and only 25% of wives are stay at home moms. I would think this would be a quite rare case. IMHO overly generous benefits for the wife probably encourages more divorces.

    Social Security (House) Proposal

Isn't the root problem a case of demographics? Because of the baby boom more people are retiring and collecting than ever before. Problem is when demographics swung in the other direction we didn't save the surplus, congress spent it. I should also add that the original social security really...

    Social Security (House) Proposal

I'd hate to see Porky because this thread has been quite educational. This is just inherently a hot topic. You can see why reaching a consensus on social security is just about impossible.

I have to do this too. Very important if you have a big CD/bond maturing. Schwab can be such a pain.

Reducing stock exposure in Retirement, age 60+

Being a gambler myself (but clearly not at your level) I've noticed that losing money gambling hurts a whole lot more than losing it investing. Same goes for making money. There a huge rush getting a jackpot that's just not there when you make money in the market. There's a mental aspect to it...

    Social Security (House) Proposal

Something needs to be done. I believe in sharing the pain across all generations. People that are already collecting should give something up along with the people that are still working and contributing.

Reducing stock exposure in Retirement, age 60+

If you've built up a large nest egg and there's no way you would spend it all then there's two rationale which are both valid. 1. I should become more aggressive with stocks because now I can afford to take the risk and maybe pull something off that's extrodinary. 2. I should become less...

Include Taxes on unrealized gains in net worth?

I calculate both values, net worth before and after taxes. Tax liability is just a rough estimate, it depends on when your gains are realized. Right now I think I will owe 7.5% of my net worth to pay off my taxes.

    Sleep pattern and sleeping pills

For one reason or another people have messed up sleep schedules. What worked for me was I forced myself to stay awake all day long without any naps and no caffeine after 6:00 in the evening. It was tough at the beginning but my body got use to it and now it's no problem.

What kind of stock/bond mix you looking at in retirement?

Retired 8 years ago. 2/3 stocks and 1/3 CDs, bonds & money market account. For me I'm at the sweet spot where I don't get too stressed out if the market crashes nor do I feel like I messed the boat if the market spike upward.

Trade Settlement Decreasing to 1 Day

If you're going to sell stock and use the proceeds to buy a mutual fund I think you can now do this on same day. Before this you had to sell your stocks (T+2), and on the next day after the 1:00 close you could buy your mutual fund (T+1). Disclaimer: After May 28th I'm going to test it out...

    Bond Call Notification

I got the same 5.6% CD. Mine matures on 10/28/24. Mine can get called on the 28th of every month. Amazingly it has gone through Jan & Feb and it hasn't been called yet. Puzzling what logic they use to call these. I'll be amazed if I can make it all the way to Oct.
