What OLD series/movies are you watching? *Spoilers welcome!*

Sometimes for fun - and when I'm up for the day before 5AM - I watch Highway Patrol on MeTV. Does anyone know: Was this show, when it originally aired, aimed at a children's audience, or was it considered adult fare? Never mind the shooting, which was common on shows back then. But the story lines are so simplistic, and dare I say childish. Even acknowledging the times when this show was first broadcast, did they really intend this show for adults?

Currently watching Quincy ME, Kojak, Rockford on getTV. Police Woman with Angie Dickinson coming soon.
It is amazing to see and remember how big those cars were in the 70's and earlier.
My Dad had a Mercury Grand Marquis that he eventually handed down to DH and I. That thing was a boat on wheels!

And the stunt driving! Watching those mushy suspensions compress and the whole car tilts. Tires getting sideways and hubcaps flying off. Good stuff.

Too much CGI in stunt driving today.

Probably, since I liked it when I was a kid. Oh still like it now but probably for different reasons. I like to catch all the mistakes they made in the making of the shows, seeing all the old cars (when they were new) and it's great for taking quick naps while still keeping up with the story line.:)

Ready for another mystery actress? In my case, this one was harder for me to identify than Louise Fletcher. I picked a screen grab that I think will make it easier to identify her.

Heck if I know.... Maybe Marion Ross

Happy Days is on my list. The grands love it, and O don’t have to worry about lewd, nasty and violent behavior. The Fonz would never tell somebody to go F#!! himself.

I wonder if that's just more a function of trying to tell a crime story, from beginning to end, in just 26 minutes. And nowadays, in syndication, they've cut that down to about 20 minutes, to pack in more commercials, so some plot details have probably been lost. They just didn't have the time to delve into a deep, intricate plot like they would with Columbo. Or heck, even "The Rockford Files."

I enjoy "Highway Patrol" for its simplicity, and quick pace. It probably wouldn't work well as an hour long show.

I wouldn't think of it as being aimed at kids, specifically, because it does seem a bit violent, and deals with subject like hit-and-run drivers, drunk driving, hostage situations, a rabid dog that bit a little girl who was on vacation, and they had to find her in time or it was 21-50 Bye for real, and so on. And there's a lot of killing in it. But then, again, it was a different time. I caught an episode of "The Lone Ranger" one night when I couldn't sleep, something I always thought of as a kids show. And I was thinking man, that seems a bit violent by today's standards. And I seem to recall even in "Superman", people would get killed on occasion.

And then, fast forward to the 1960s, when we got "Jonny Quest" and "Speed Racer." Some of those had scenes that could be downright nightmare-inducing. There was a couple times in "Speed Racer" where a jungle cat would fall into piranha-infested water and get stripped to the bone, and I remember some race car drivers ending up getting killed by piranhas (just not as graphic with the humans). And with "Jonny Quest," I think "The Invisible Monster" and "Quetong Missile Mystery" stick out as "possibly traumatizing" to little kids...now and then.

I think Jonny Quest and Speed Racer ultimately got yanked from regular viewing, because many of their episodes took place in far off, foreign lands. And their depiction of the inhabitants of those foreign lands wasn't always favorable. The "Quetong Missile Mystery" was even renamed in more recent years as simply "The Q Missile Mystery". There was also an episode that got edited, because Race Bannon actually called some tribespeople "heathen monkeys!"

Of course, Jonny Quest was originally on prime-time, so it wasn't aimed squarely at kids, so perhaps that excuses some of it.

Yeah, but Joannie knew a bit too much for an innocent young girl of her age. I remember one episode where Richie bought a '52 or so Chevy. When Joannie checked it out, she said "Those are Nash seats." Howard said something like "why yes, they are." And Joannie replies, "Great for necking!"

I've been watching the Jesse Stone movies in chronological order... about 3 or 4 movies in.

Well we finished off the Highway Patrol series yesterday and now we are "re-starting" the Route 66 series.

That was only said to shock her father. :D

Compared to Ted Lasso where even 10 year olds commonly use the F word, Joanie is a saint.

Good luck with this one! I'll be chiming in with clues. I have a feeling they will be needed.

I vote Bert Convy.

Somewhere up thread I mentioned I like to watch PlutoTV game shows as background noise.

A few of those shows feature Bert Convy. He has distinctive cheekbones and nose. Popped right out at me.

You guys are correct!

Wow, I was not expecting that...
Could you pick another "actress" for the next "guess the star" picture? Somehow that's more interesting. :)

I'm really getting a kick out of watching old Perry Mason episodes. I'm on S3 now, which was 1959-1960. The criminal plots are quite sophisticated, the acting is great, the guest actors are surprising. The only letdown, at times, is the corny and unbelievable confessions at the end of the courtroom scenes. I also love seeing the old cars that I grew up with as a kid.

Let's play "Name That Thespian." I'll post a photo of an actor/actress that we all know and see if you can guess who it is. I'll start out with an easy one. If no one gets it after several hours I will give a clue.

Gotta be Norman Fell.

Tougher one... I'll think about it, but my 1st impression is, it's a picture of a younger Cloris Leachman
