2024 Investment Performance Thread

That’s a heavy crypto tilt. How’s your VTI up 38%?
Yes, I thought YTD Vanguard VTI claim was a bit high. I believe that is all time. YTD is 9.58%

Yes, high in crypto :). Much to its success. Started at 5-10% allocation prior to bull run. Will reallocate soon.

I'm irresponsibly higher risk than I would suggest to anyone. I feel comfortable doing this since my wife and I have dual military pensions.

I'm pretty aggressive with my investments too but my crypto position is so small it barely registers in my allocation.

My VTI in my brokerage account is up 52.8% YTD if I include my contributions but only 12.6% if I don't. Maybe your number includes contributions?

It very well could be. Vanguard does not make it easy to decipher for sure.

For the lovely month of April 2024, our portfolio total was -1.95%.

For the year +2.66% increase.

As measured just now, it is 65% equities and the rest is bond funds, iBonds, HYSA, and MMF.

We spent a proper amount in Spain, and that will come out of this month's gyrations.

I use the Excel XIRR function and, yes, it does include both withdrawals and additions. I am currently at 5.0% with 65% equities and 35% fixed income.
This is the "gold standard". I use an estimate, which we were calling "monkey (something or other), which just presumes even spending over the time period. A few times I did xirr and compared it with even spending and it was so close as to not worry about. But I do an "all-in" calculation, meaning all accounts, investment and spending accounts are included, which is why xirr is too much effort for this "gee wiz" number.

My reports here each month, too, are inclusive of spending. I track our comprehensive portfolio at two brokerages via Empower (formerly Personal Capital.)

I'm all-in on a S&P index fund; 9.5% YTD. Have been so since I retired in 2012 and haven't touched it since my pension and now SS more than meets our financial needs.

Just returned from our 5 1/2 week dive vacation and have caught up on my quicken updates. My values are exclusive of additions and subtractions as I haven't been taking withdrawals for a couple of years now that SS has kicked in for me.

April MTD -3.52%
April YTD +4.35%

Allocation at 81/16/3

Too lazy to calculate but looks like about 7% so far - helped by PMs and Old Megacorp stock on a tear lately. Big spending comes later in the year, but I don't expect it to affect total too much (less than 1% as most proposed spending is baked in the cake already.) YMMV

YTD 6.47% - AA = 38% small cap, 27% fixed income, cash +cash investment (CD) 26%, and 9% international.
MTD 3.07%

That’s an interesting AA on your equities, small cap and international. I’m interested in your logic if you don’t mind sharing.

I should likely have said that this is just one brokerage account which is about 20% of overall investments. International is mostly speculative Canadian gold miners. Equities are mostly CEFs and div paying.

Jan '24 : +1.35%
Feb '24: +5.1% unfortunately trailing the SP500 with my massive position in AAPL and the bit of a hit that's taken. 100% equities, ~66% Magnificent 7, 34% AAPL
Mar' 24 +5%. Flat month with AAPL dragging me down. People warned me not to be so exposed to one equity, but here I am. It's treated me well in the past.
Apr' 24 +1.25% AAPL was 40% of my portfolio, with the pull back it went to 32% eeeek, or Whee!
May 24 +10.34% ytd. 50% of the folio is concentrated in AAPL MSFT and NVDA now. Hang on!

Heh, heh, do what I did. Learn from your mistake! Ooops! I mean MISTAKES (plural in my case.)

Definitely taking on some known risk.

This is AAPL vs SP500 past 5yrs running. I've had a fun couple of rides, especially during/post COVID. AAPL has actually been that one stock that I didn't make the wrong choice on. It was a forum member Running_Bum who told me to buy as much AAPL as I had available when it got below $90. I didn't wait and bought it at $95. It split a couple times. Now I have saved what my father had when he retired at 65 8 years ago. Remarkable. I've never owned an Apple device myself, but DW always has along with her whole family tree. They are stuck on the apple eco-system.

Here are a couple chart's that I like and a reason I will stay invested heavily into AAPL. This horse has made some nice strides in the race...

+10.38% YTD, inclusive of spending, on $1.68 million:
  • 18% Bitcoin, Fidelity Bitcoin ETF, and a Bitcoin industry stock (MSTR).
  • 41% global stock index funds
  • 41% global bond index funds and cash
58 and 61 years old, semi-retired

Exclusive of additions and subtractions.

May 4.02%
YTD 8.54%

Usual advice of sell in May and go away would have been bad news this year.

I just added it up this morning, and here's the results...

1/31/2024: +0.78% YTD.
2/29/2024: +4.67% YTD.
3/28/2024: +7.33% YTD.
4/30/2024: +4.36% YTD.
5/31/2024: +8.58% YTD.

So essentially, I got back the April loss, and then some. May was also a good lesson on focusing more on the bigger picture, and not putting too much stock in the day-to-day noise. I had peaked out on May 21, up 9.46%, so when it pulled back I was a bit bummed. But then when I added it all up, and saw how well May as a whole was, I felt better. Not to mention YTD gains, how far it's gained from this point one year ago, two years ago, etc.

YTD up 9.2% on 75/18/7 AA. That's inclusive of contributions. Guesstimate w/o contributions would be YTD up 7.5%.

Can't spend it any faster!

Total Portfolio Balance is up 4.74% YTD.

We've recovered to March 2024 high, and gone a bit beyond.

The asset allocation target is here: Path Forward 2024

Is "Path Forward 2024" available as a "mutual fund" or ETF? Or does one actually invest in all those other funds? That would seem a daunting task to keep it balanced and it would be a tax nightmare unless all held in qualified instrument(s). I'm sure I'm missing something.

Preliminary (good enough to report) results:
January: -0.2%
February: +0.7%
March: +1.7%
April: -1.2%
YTD: +1.0%
YoY: +6.1%
Since 12/31/22: +12.1%
Since 12/31/21: -1.2%
Since 12/31/20: +10.5%
Since 12/31/19: +25.0%
Preliminary May results:
January: -0.2%
February: +0.7%
March: +1.7%
April: -1.2%
May: +3.3%
YTD: +4.6%
YoY: +9.8%
Since 12/31/22: +15.8%
Since 12/31/21: +2.1%
Since 12/31/20: +14.1%
Since 12/31/19: +30.0%

The above are "all in", i.e. inclusive of money outflows for living expenses (now retired). I hit new all time highs in May (finally past the year end 21 highs) including momentarily (one day) hitting a new "million" marker. Alas, the mid-week selloffs took that away.
