My 15 year journey can be summed up in six words: go go, go slow, and no go.
After my DW passed away in 2005, I kept w*king because it seemed the thing to do. Well, life is funny, because some years later I met a lady who was also widowed and we married. I waited for my profit sharing to be posted in my 401(k) in January and retired the next week.

DW had not traveled much, and we hit it with a vengeance. However, after 12 years, 41 countries, 51 trips, 500 travel days, and 17 cruises, we are done with travel.

As for financials, between SS and pensions, our income is about 87K. We have a nice nest egg that is now 4X what it was when I retired. According to Firecalc, we will never run out of money. I am 85 and DW is 80.

As far as health care, especially at our age, we have a Medicare Advantage plan that is quite good, and is associated with a hospital about 10 minutes away. Our health is pretty good for our age, and I try to not do things like go up ladders.

We made our (hopefully) last move 2 years ago, from a +55 MHP to a lovely apartment right on the ocean, There is an elevator, and of course there is no outside maintenance. We are on the South Central coast of California, which has a Mediterranean climate.
Life is good!

I'm in my early 70's and I've been retired since I was 60. In the past decade+, I've gone from going very fast, to going slower, and now just going. Sure glad I didn't wait. I can see the stop sign ahead.

Money was never a problem and I don't see it ever becoming one. Spend rate has been dropping the past few years and I expect it is leveling off now.

Another great retirement success story. You have seen and done a lot of things in 15 years. I wish you and your wife many more happy years together in Retirement.

Thanks for your story.

Congrats. I love your posts and they show your love for your wife.
You might be the oldest current active poster.

Appreciate you sharing your journey. Congrats on 15 years and thanks for your many helpful posts on this forum.

Congratulations! I'll be very happy if I'm still active & doing all the things I love today when I'm your age.

Thanks for the great FIRE story. We love them.

We are still go go. Just got back from 3 weeks in Ireland. We did retire at 57 and are still mid 60's. I know we won't keep it up forever.

Souschef--congratulations on your 15 years! I enjoy looking at your travel stories and pictures when you post them. May you and your DW enjoy many more years of sunny, coastal life!

I think we're now Slo-Go stage. Okay by me.

Life is good indeed. Thanks for sharing

If I understand correctly you moved out of a 55+ community to a standard apartment. What was the motivation for this?

My wife grew up about 3 miles from where we live now. We just happened to drive by this new construction and decided to check it out.
We fell in love with the view of the beach and ocean.
Also, there were much more to do and many more restaurants and stores.
When I go back to the MHP, it is like a ghost town with virtually noboby around.
I have attached the view from our window

Life now doesn't suck...:)

I've been been fortunate to follow your adventures along the way. Your passion for flying is something I long admired, but never had the courage to do myself. Thank you for sharing them! You have had a full life, with the adventure, passion and love all of us hope we have, plus the inevitable pain along the way. All part of it.

Best to you and the wife in the next phase together!

Very lovely indeed. If you get out the binoculars, you may see us looking back at you from 2500 miles west-south-west.

This pluses ~70 degree year round southern CA weather. You are in heaven.

I missed this when you first posted. Lovely view of the Channel Islands. Congrats on 15 years of freedom.

LOL. Southern CA heaven? Not for this guy. We lived in CA off and on from 1990-2009. DS and his bride still live in North Park (San Diego). They are moving out of there in August. They make over 200K combined and can barely afford a 2/1 house. Cons seriously outweigh the pro's for So Cal for this guy and my family. Temp is frequently less than 70. Water is cold. I'll take it here on the Chesapeake Bay all day over high priced So Cal. 96 here today. Went swimming on my beach. Awesome day.

I feel sorry for the younger folks in SoCal, We are older and took advantage of the run up in house prices.
Sold our first house for a profit, bought a more expensive place, then sold that one and downsized to the MHP.
Took the balance and shared it with our sons.
We then moved to our apartment where the 2/2 rent is 52K, which is well covered with our SS and pensions of 87K.
Any other expenses are covered by our RMD, including gifts to our sons.

Yep, I grew up in Orange County CA and the only places i can afford to buy are in 55+ communities...I've been talking to a lady who wants to live in San Diego - when I told her that you can't get something decent in San Diego for less than $1M, she's been sending me real estate listings to stuff in Otay Mesa , which apparently used to have gang problems. It's still all over 500k if not considerably higher.

It finally hit 75 degrees today. The marine layer has been in full effect most of 2024 until maybe last week.

It sounds like you found your piece of heaven in Chesapeake Bay. I still think OP found their heaven in Southern CA

Congratulations on celebrating 15 years of retirement! Love your forever view! Can you see dolphins in the surf and migrating whales from your place?

We can see dolphins, but the whales are on the other side of the islands.
